OpenAI pushes ChatGPT into spreadsheets, agents, and admin controls
OpenAI pushes harder into managed workplace tools.
OpenAI spent the last week pushing ChatGPT further into real work systems. The company rolled out a spreadsheet sidebar for Excel and Google Sheets, opened workspace agents to Enterprise tenants with key management turned on, and added new admin views for adoption and agent activity.
That is a clearer signal than one more model benchmark. OpenAI is trying to make ChatGPT easier to buy, govern, and use inside the software teams already live in.
Today’s lineup
- ChatGPT for Excel and Google Sheets is now live globally, with a spreadsheet-native sidebar for building, updating, and explaining workbooks.
- Workspace agents now support eligible ChatGPT Enterprise workspaces that use Enterprise Key Management.
- OpenAI added new Analytics and Agents views in the global admin console, plus a separate ChatGPT for Intune iOS app for tighter mobile controls.
OpenAI | ChatGPT lands in Excel and Google Sheets
OpenAI says ChatGPT for Excel and Google Sheets is now available globally. The add-ins put a ChatGPT sidebar directly inside spreadsheets so users can build sheets from scratch, clean up messy workbooks, explain formulas, update assumptions, and review multi-tab models in place.
The company says the spreadsheet experience can also use Skills and connected apps where available, which matters more than the add-in itself: it turns spreadsheet work into another surface where ChatGPT can pull from approved files, systems, and data sources instead of working from a blank prompt. Business, Enterprise, Edu, and K-12 customers get a free preview through June 2 before usage moves onto credits and plan terms.
OpenAI | Workspace agents reach stricter Enterprise setups
In ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu release notes dated May 7, OpenAI said workspace agents now support eligible Enterprise workspaces with Enterprise Key Management. That closes an early gap from the April rollout, when EKM tenants were explicitly excluded at launch.
OpenAI says those workspaces can now build agents from templates or from scratch, connect supported tools and apps, add skills, files, and custom MCP servers, schedule recurring runs, use agents in connected Slack channels, and review version history and analytics. Agents stay off by default, with admin controls for building, publishing, and Slack usage.
OpenAI | Admin and mobile controls keep expanding
OpenAI also added new Analytics and Agents areas to the global admin console for Business and Enterprise admins. The new views pull adoption, usage, projects, skills, tool interactions, agent schedules, and recent activity into one place, which makes ChatGPT look more like software IT can actually monitor instead of a loose collection of seats.
On mobile, OpenAI released ChatGPT for Intune on iOS and iPadOS for Enterprise customers. It is a separate app that lets IT teams apply Microsoft Intune app-protection policies and Conditional Access to ChatGPT, with Microsoft-only sign-in and organization onboarding required before rollout.
Why it matters now
This is a practical product story, but it is an important one. OpenAI is making ChatGPT look less like a standalone chatbot and more like managed workplace software that lives inside spreadsheets, Slack, and locked-down enterprise environments.
If that push works, the competitive fight shifts away from one-off model demos and toward who can win inside the governed systems where finance, operations, and IT teams already work.
What to watch next
Watch adoption friction. The spreadsheet add-ins have to feel faster than native formulas and existing copilots, while workspace agents still need clear approval, auditing, and admin controls to move beyond experiments.
